My big trips, and some of the short ones:

  • 1968    Europe: 6 weeks hitch hiking from England down to Greece via Italy and back via Yugoslavia

  • 1969    Europe: Engalnd to Italy in an old VW Beetle, staying longest in Sperlonga, a small beach town between Roma and Naples

  • 1973    Overland for 5 months mostly by bus through Asia and on to Australia: Belgium, Germany, Austria, Yugoslavia, Greece, Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Israel, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Nepal (including my first ever flight), Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore then by ship to Australia

  • 1975    Australia : 4 months around Oz in a Land-Rover

  • 1975    From Australia back to the UK via Thailand, Greece then by bus to Holland. My first long haul flights.

  • 1975    Scotland: A week or two at Lauriston commune, then onto a Tibetan Buddhist community and then the Edinburgh Festival

  • 1975    Picking grapes in Tulette, Côtes du Rhône, France

  • 1979    USA, Canada & Mexico: 5 months around the west in a VW Kombi.. followed by Hepatitis

  • 1980    USA & Pacific: a month's unlimited air travel on Continental, then on to Fiji, New Zealand, Australia and back via Hawaii

  • 1984?   Europe: VW camper from Belgium through France, northern Spain to Portugal and back

  • 1986    Maldives: diving with sharks

  • 1989    The Balkans in the VW camper: Romania in the last days of Ceausescu; Yugoslavia, about to fall apart; Hungary; Greece

  • 1993?   Indonesia: driving in West Kalimantan (Borneo)

  • 1995?   Indonesia: Diving in Bunaken, North Sulawesi

  • 1995?   Finland and Estonia - an interesting stopover on my way from Indonesia to the UK

  • 1996?   Cambodia: Phnom Penh and Siem Riep (Angkor Wat)

  • 1996?   Dubai: another stopover on my way from Indonesia to the UK. Excellent desert trip.

  • 1997?   Indonesia: A few days with the Badui people, a major experience.

  • 1998    Philippines: Several short vacations while working in Manila: Puerto Galera, Dakak in Mindanao, Boracay

  • 2000    Australia : a short trip in the centre in a 4WD from Uluru (Ayers Rock) to Alice Springs

  • 2001?    UK : Walking the Wye Valley and canal paths of the England Wales border

  • 2002?    UK : Walking the Thames from its source.

  • 2001     Indonesia: A week on a phinisi (traditional sailing boat, fitted with a diesel motor) from S Sulawesi via various little islands to Komodo, Sumbawa, Lombok and Bali with  www.ambasi.com.

  • 2003    UK : Walking in Wales

  • 2004    Laos : Vientiane, Luang Prabang and the Mekong

  • 2005    North Korea and China (Beijing, Xian)

  • 2006    Australia: Perth to Alice via the Nullarbor and back via the Great Central Highway, sleeping under the stars; Melbourne to Adelaide by train

  • 2006    Walking in Wales again

  • 2006    Southern Africa: Safari by 4WD through S Africa, Namibia, Botswana (Okavango delta), Zambia (rafting on the Zambezi), and briefly in Zimbabwe (Victoria Falls).

  • 2007/3 France. By train to Nice with a night in Paris.

  • 2007/6 UK: stayed in Dulverton in Somerset as a base for walking on Exmoor

  • 2007/7 Greece: Athens, Sifnos, Peloponnese

  • 2007/9 Spain: Seville, Granada, Cordoba.
